Experience Points Ranking System

Each time you play a game online that involves at least one other human player, experience points (XP) are awarded. These are tracked in addition to win, loss, surrender, and disconnect statistics. If you’ve ever played a game like Dungeons & Dragons, you’ll immediately be familiar with our system. Check out the Master XP Formula and the Experience Levels below to see the details.

Master XP Formula

Points are earned (and lost) separately for each game on the site. You earn points based on this formula:

(Base Value * Skill Modifier) + Bonus

Notes on Base Value:   

  • Experience points are based on the number of players who finish the game! Thus, if a five player game has one person disconnect, then awards are given as if it were a four player game.
  • If someone disconnects, their result is zero points.
  • If someone surrenders, they are treated as if they were in last place in terms of experience. This is true for every player that surrenders.
  • In a game like Nuclear War, a player is considered to have finished the game normally if they are knocked out of the game and they then leave the game (or disconnect).
  • The number of players includes human players only – thus a 3 player Cosmic Wimpout game that includes one AI player is scored as if it were a 2-player game. For example, if the AI came in first, you would earn experience points as if the second player came in first, and so on. This means that a game with only one human player scores no points.

Skill Modifier

If your points are positive (and only if they are positive), then their base value is multiplied by the skill modifier. To use the chart, subtract your level (see below) from the average opponent level (rounded down).

Each game also has one or more cases of surprise bonuses that are specific to those games. Note that games which you are disconnected from, or you surrender from, are not considered finished.

Experience Levels

Your ability as a player is seen by everyone on the site as your experience level with that game (in shorthand it is just referred to as your "level"). In addition, groups of levels are referred to by a name, such as novice or expert. The experience points needed to attain a new level are shown on this chart.

Notes on levels:

  • Everyone starts at level one for each game.
  • Levels are tracked separately for each game.
  • Once you gain a level, you can never lose it. Thus, if you have 250 experience points and you lose 100 points, you just lose 50 and are now at 200 points, the minimum for level two.
  • Displays which show another player’s experience, such as the player information window, would show up like this: “Novice (3)” or “Expert (27)”.
