Job Opportunities at GameTable Online

Web Developer (May 2011)

GameTable Online has been hosting online games at www.gametableonline.com since 2003. Our business and traffic continue to grow and it is time to redo our website. We need a skilled and dedicated web developer to make it happen.

Our existing game portal features a Java lobby for socializing and game launch, a web site with game information, forum, stat tracking, leader boards, an onsite currency system, reward points and prize redemption. We also own and maintain other smaller related domains, like www.metagame.biz. Our current website contains a large amount of php code, mysql calls, css and occasional proxy calls to Java, etc. We have a phbb forum which is poorly integrated with the rest of the site and home-brew CMS admin pages (using tinyedit).

Our goals for this website makeover:

  • Great-looking performant site
  • Easy content, game and registered-user administration by non-programmers
  • Integration or conversion of our existing MySQL tables
  • Expanded community features such as game rating and review by registered users, tournament ladders, etc.
  • A forum fully integrated with the site
  • Retain and enhance current functionality (not necessarily with current code)

We are looking for a contract developer with deep experience with full-featured interactive web sites like ours. The developer will work closely with art and web designer(s) yet to be chosen. Since the code and data have been maintained for years by our in-house game and server programmers, this assignment will start with a great deal of live, in-office contact (Northampton, MA, USA). It is not a candidate for telecommuting until it reaches the maintenance stage. We estimate some months of intensive design, implementation and data conversion, followed by ongoing contract maintenance and feature addition. Since GTO also maintains sites for contract clients, there is a possibility for future work in addition to site maintenance.

Required skills:

  • Deep web development language skills, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript (AJAX) and the server-side language(s) of choice (our current code is in PHP)
  • MySQL or other database
  • Deep experience with web frameworks, ability to choose the best one for our needs and carry out the conversion efficiently
  • Ability to collaborate with art and web designer on content design and layout and with content managers on usability
  • Software engineering skills: code organization, readability and reusability
  • Agile (short development cycle) style
  • Self-managed self-starter

Bonus skills:

  • Knowledge of solutions for database performance if the framework serves pages from the DB, such as mongodb or other massive-throughput DB.
  • Comfort with other programming languages. We use Java Enterprise (Tomcat) for our non-Apache work and it may be desirable to convert some admin pages from Tomcat to Apache
  • An appreciation of games and gamer
