Game stallers suck

Some of you know me that I don't like giving names in the forum. But I consider this one crossed the line. This opponent was taking his turns at most one hour after mines when he was ahead in the game thanks to very lucky dice he was getting. But when I turned the tide of the game and have Germany surrounded, he started to wait full 3 day limit to take his turns. I don't mind people playing a game where they have 0% chance of winning like this one, but at least take your turns a lot more quickly. If you are not gonna do that, then surrender. There is no point to continue to a game that you will eventually lose, and you will only make your opponents not want to play you in the future. The reason why I thought this one crossed the line was the language he decided to use where you can see that in the chat box. I might have been a little aggresive with my request but typing something like that behind the safety of a keyboard is just ...
I just want to let everybody to know that this is not chess.com or anything. You can't get away with game stalling here, like you do somewhere else. This is a smaller gaming community than chess.com. One advantage of this is that many players know each other. If you don't follow the unwritten rules of good sportsmanship, you can easily build a bad reputation for yourselves and the GTO community will be aware of it.

It sounds like you are being a little bit harsh in your criticism, it was after all a 3 day turn limit you both agreed to. Please realize life tends to get in the way of gaming and sometimes peoples priorities change.

If you don't like waiting three days for your opponent to make a move, don't play with a three game timer. Frankly I think you got a tame response for how you talked to him.

By the way, this opponent has a 16% win rate or something like that and you're close to 60% with double the games played. Well done.

My god! If you like to go noob huntin', tappin' on the fish bowl when you got one on the hook is not the course you should be taking!

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but if I went huntin' for players with win rate 4x lower than mine, I'd be sweet talkin' my opponent thru the ending, saying things like "it's amazing how the dice turned on you so hard!" "If I do win this, I have to offer you a rematch, because I feel as if I stole it after all the red dice I got!" "Will be interesting to see how we do if we could get some fair dice!"

And, if the opponent went over his 3 days, I'd send him a PM letting him know & tellin' him how guilty I feel about robbing him of a win with all the red dice I got that allowed me recover & then give him some more time to make his move.

Yea, I'd make a "friend".....but that's just me........that is.......if I went huntin' for players with a win rate 4x lower than mine.

Of course my win rate of 38%/4 is 9.x%, so I doubt there are many [if any] out there!!

Don't assume something without knowing you guys! I set up an open challenge, he accepted it. It's not like GTO has a set up, where I can enter minimum and maximum level. For crying out loud at the same time I am playing a level 35. People come and accept my challenges and I weIcome anyone. I know about the 3 day limit and I can play someone without complaining even if they take their turns in 3 + 1 days as long as the game is even. I am not talking about those people. But this one, the game is over. There is no point to continue. Up until USA took control of S. Euro he was winning the game and he was taking his turns really quickly. Once he realized he will lose the game, he started to drag the game as much as he could. For me this is equivalent to leaving a game at chess.com without closing the window when you have 1 king vs 1 king, 1 queen and 2 rooks. Anybody who played there knows what I mean. You have to wait 20 mins sometimes, and if you close your window you will lose the game. This is what I am talking about. People continue to play even they know they lost the game and they do it so with maximum allowed time. So yeah when I see this kind of behavior, it gets me mad and I will say something like "play like a man". I have gotten comments a lot harsher than this from my opponents. But I have never responded with an inappropriate language.
This is not one of those 'life gets in the way" situations. It is game stalling. I really don't want GTO to turn into a gaming site like chess.com. It is nasty over there. Right after this screenshot I took Berlin as UK and he still continues to play. Now isn't this game stalling? Plus on top of it, I see some more comments from my opponent in the chat box.

A person with a 16% win rate has 2 reasons for playing to the death:

1. Seeing how the stronger player ends the game & learn something.

and then, by the time it's all but over..........so close to his opponent having 9 VCs

2. Play to the death to get XP points for finishing a lost game!

You get those bonus points for every 10 games you lose & fight to the death!

How do you think I managed to get to Advanced[22] with a 38% win rate?!

Not even close to the same thing. One is live, the other is pbem. One requires you to remain at the computer to get the win, the other doesn't. The comparison is not even remotely relevant.

If you want a player to end a game early because you are impatient, ask nicely. The harsh language you got from other opponents is not harsh language you got from StompinStu. Show me the chat where he showed the slightest disrespect as a GTO member to you until you told him to act "like a man." That is the perfect example of "inappropriate language."

Utz also succinctly pointed out why your opponent would continue to play so I won't bother rehashing it.

You want to play to death, I am also ok with it. But in that case don't waste my time. Don't wait till the last hour of your turn limit. There are times I even tell some of my opponents I wouldn't mind if they continue to play to death because I want to know how the game is going to end. Even with this game, I would not want my opponent to surrender at least until Germany falls. There is this extra joy I get, when I capture a capital. But I really can't put up with someone taking maximum time right after the tide has turned. And it is not like my request was that harsh. My intent was to show that I am getting a little frustrated.

Frankly I think you got a tame response for how you talked to him.

BK we are playing a game here where sometimes tensions rise high. Yes it is a game, but many of us still get emotional. So there are times when somebody will leave a comment a little harsh. I have done it, my opponents in the games have done it. But we do it so without crossing the boundaries. I have gotten comments from my opponents a lot harsher then the one I did in this game. But in none of those, neither I or my opponents resort to inappropriate language. According to your statement above, it makes it okay for someone to use language anytime they saw a harsh comment.

Kemal, I've enjoyed reading many of your posts, and I think we had the pleasure of playing once. I certainly understand the frustration that can sometimes come out in a game, but try and look at this objectively. What do you think the normal response is to someone, who just beat you in a game, telling you to "be a man?" What do you think the response would be if you said that ftf? I don't mean to imply whether you're a tough guy or not, or anything along those lines, but I'm trying to illustrate that almost always the response you would get would at least be the response that you got.

Did you ask him before that quote to please surrender, or to finish up quickly? Seems you owed a polite request along those lines at the minimum, and in a pbem game, I'm not sure that's fair etiquette to even ask.

One final thought, just because others have been "harsher" to you is not a license for you to be harsh to others. That's not how it works.

I said "Take the loss like a man". How is this that harsh, that will make one respond with "FU"? And I made it clear why I posted about this guy. It wasn't that he was taking his turns slowly, but it was his response that made me break my rule about giving up names and post it here.

With pbem it's even worse. I have to wait weeks. It is not so hard to leave the window open and do something else with a live chess game. I have to wait only 20 mins to get my win.

Dragging a game is I consider enough disrespect to me. If I had done the same thing, then I wouldn't have minded if my opponent use the same comments towards me, and actually I would have apologized.

Looks like we are typing comments at the same time. That's why my responses are one post behind. I know about the game I played with you. Actually that game's end screenshot became my Facebook cover photo, as my greatest game ever. I am also glad you brought it up because, I was whining about dice like non-stop and you knew how to handle me. You had done the mature thing. That's why during the game I apologized to you. You are one of the people who changed my behavior about dice, Utzchips is the other one and there are some more others. One good thing about GTO is the more experienced players can teach newer players a thing or two, not only about gaming but also about good sportsmanship. But if the newer is cussing, that makes is a lot harder for the more experienced player. I just don't consider saying "take the loss like a man" as inappropriate language. It's harsh, but I consider it to be very mild. I am also not trying to get back at this person because of harsh comments that were done by the previous opponents. Because I didn't mind even a little bit these comments. These kind of comments happen during the game and there is nothing wrong with it. They are okay as long as one is not cussing or calling other side names. For me this is when somebody crosses the line.
And to respond what if someone else said the same thing to me, first of all I won't stall a game. And if I did, and my opponent said the same thing I would say "I am sorry" and surrender. I most certainly wouldnt respond with "FU".

I did not have a great experience with the player Kemal is refering to for what its worth.
When posting up an open game, I do make it for extra coins in order to find someone who may be around my rate.
Hoping whoever will except might look at my stats first.
Certainly if someone wants to play up, They have the right to accept any game posted.

For the most part, I do check the user before accepting a open game.
Also, once someone excepts a game of mine and I do not know them, I check their stats.
Not just for win/loss but also to see where they are from and time zone.

creating an open game is a good way to reach out to other players. There are many hidden
gems of players out there. They are not at all easy wins. And they are not all active here in the mbs.

I believe though, Kemal could of just waited. The win will come one way or another (FS)
Sometimes I make moves 3 times a day. Sometimes I dont feel like looking or playing for a couple days or
I have too many going, it may take a few days till I have the time to move. Heck, sometimes work also gets in the way of movement in every game.
BTW I will FS But have Never FS without
sending a pm and waiting several days for a reply....RL can also impact timely moves-

I will admit that I can get demoralized after a momentum shift. If I thought I had the game and then suddenly I don't, I might slow down my play. It kind of knocks the wind out of my sails. I'll step back, think about how the game has gone, and move cautiously to see if I can reel it back to the win category. Although if I feel the blow was irrecoverable (sudden and unexpected loss of a capital with no hope of recapture next round), I'll surrender out of self-loathing. That happens too .

On the victory side, I get excited when a win is close. I'll speed up my play, anxiously awaiting the 9 VC conclusion.

Surely I'm not the only one who has done this...

kemal, there are people playing from all over the world. many people may be more annoyed or even offended by someone saying "be a man" more than by saying FU - that is almost a term of endearment where i come from....
