Battle Cry: 150th Civil War Anniversary Edition

Postby Yojimbo252 » Mon Sep 19, 2011 11:15 am

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Are there any plans to release an updated version of Battle Cry that includes the latest 150th Civil War Anniversary Edition rules?

We have not discussed this with Wizards of the Coast as of yet. I did go through the rules, scenarios, and cards to list out the changes that we would have to our existing rule set. I am not a programmer so I did not estimate the work but mapping the rules changes are one of the first steps in this process. At a glance the challenging part of the project, aside from selling the idea to Wizards, is probably the variety of special rules for specific scenarios.

As a gamer, I do like the updated rules. Generals now provide a bonus to defending rather than attacking which I think will make the game a bit more tactical. The All-Out Offensive card has been replaced with the less powerful Battle Cry card (roll dice and you give orders to the units that match up with the dice facings). The big rule that I welcome is the ability to use unusable special cards as "give an order to unit of your choice." So that means if you get Hit and Run card with no cavalry, it doesn't mean you have a dead card in your hand or have to take a dead turn.

Fair enough. I hope you're successful especially in light of the fact that you already have a great online version of the previous rule set.

Agreed on all points.

I like the toned down generals. I've always felt that adding an extra die was a bit too good and the new system works well as it does with C&C Napoleonics. Like you say it does make the game a bit more tactical which isn't a bad thing.

Don't get me started on the AOO card. :D Replacing it was the best change imo.

The only negative is that I wish they incorporated diminishing firepower with block losses. That system works very well in CCN and I still grimace in BC when a unit with just a solitary block remaining fires at full strength.

What would be the rule changes in the 150th Civil War Edition from the original rules?

I own the original Battle Cry boardgame and played numerous campaigns against my cousin (who plays mainly 1960: Prez here now)
I have also played Battle Cry 150 ed. in a game shop and can tell you it adopts many Command & Colors rules e.g. strength in numbers, generals allow you to disregard flags, and flags don't push entire unit off board (just take one damage)
Also, all cards can be used as skirmish anywhere, there are some new outflank type cards "2 orders left + 2 orders right" and NO MORE ALL OUT OFFENSIVE card.

That said, the original has a better (thicker/sturdier) board which is typical for a 12-13 year old board game compared to more recent ones.

I own the original version of Battle Cry as well... the new rules seem interesting, and better in a way...
