'Hold the Line'

Postby Very » Sat Dec 06, 2008 6:23 pm

Given the popularity of 'Battle Cry' in the short space that it has been live on GTO, I see potential for other fast play hex based war games.

'Hold the Line' from Worthington Games http://www.worthingtongames.com/ is very similar in scope to 'Battle Cry', possibly one step up the complexity ladder as it includes slightly more unit types. I also think it will appeal to those who do not like the Card based Flank centric, play of the latter but still enjoy the horse and musket period of conflict.

Covering both the AWI and the French & Indian wars, and the ability to play the scenarios from it's predecessor "Clash for a Continent" it offers 32 scenarios, out of the box as it were, and an additional 2 scenarios available for download on the web site, as are the rules.

With 'Battle Cry' under the programmers belt this game will give great 'bang for the buck' or at least reduce the development curve, as the game board and terrain tiles are the same, tactics are similar and no cards are involved.

If you have not tried it, take a look. As a die Hard Command and Colors fan I feel almost guilty to admit that I prefer the 'Hold the Line" game mechanics. To the point that I have even attempted to use the rules with 'Battle Cry' scenarios and 10mm figures.

Food for thought for Jay and co, and a heads up for those who discovered 'Battle Cry' via GTO and are considering getting a good war game to play in the real world too.

* Disclaimer, I am only a fan of the game and have no connection with Worthington*

Thanks for the suggestion, Very.

I agree that the popularity of Battle Cry suggests that we want to be looking more in this direction.

I've only been slightly aware of Worthington's offerings having once considered a purchase of their Cowboys game. I'll be sure to give their games a closer look..

BTW - For those who might be interested, these games look wonderful!

Have a look: http://www.worthingtongames.com/images/ ... linfo.html

Well, I should say "this game" since they only have shots of the main game. You've got me interested.

I'd like to see the fantasy one (Battle Lore?).

I find that I don't much care about the intricate details of American history and the luck element is too overwhelming for me to really like the game.

..of course I don't know that Battle Lore is any better in that regard.

I think you will find it is still very luck based as it still uses the same cards and battle dice, just adds some fantasy flavour in the form of Lore Cards and the characters.
It is the only Command and Colours game that I don't personally own as I don't like the Fantasy aspect. It feels like the 100 years war but with Lord of the Ring Characters, not my cup of tea. I will stick to historical games.

Hold the Line actually has less luck involved as it still uses the dice but eliminates the cards.

Don't hold your breath about Battle Lore. i love it, myself, but DOW had their own online thing and were supposed to be working on it. FFG doesn't currently have an interest in having their games here.

That's too bad about FFG. I believe several of their games would do well here including Warrior Knights, Fury of Dracula, and maybe even Twilight Imperium.

Twilight Imperium - it would take about a week to play a full game online! :)

Fury of Dracula would have been nice. Oh well. I'm just pleased that GTO have RoboRally - my absolute favourite game! :)
