Feature Request: Turn Counter

Postby BKBrawler » Fri Jul 22, 2011 3:44 pm

I'm playing a pbem game with bb82 and we were talking about africa and I was trying out a new US strategy, which was working out well, but we were trying to figure out what turn number it was. So much of the game depends on being in x by z, and having a by c.

For us gamers out there who like to keep track of game develoments by the turns, it would be nice to have a feature that kept track. Just some little box in a corner that had the number of the turn it was. I think this would go a long way to helping players figure out their strategies since it would let them know on what timescale they're accomplishing their various objectives, and whether they need to tweak things to get it sppeded up, or if they have opportunities to hit other places since they may have more time.

Of course, experience is usually the best teacher for these things, but I think a Turn Counter would be useful and easy enough to program in. It would be especially useful for pbem games since its easy to lose track of where you are when days separate turns.

Cheers!

This'll probably sound ridiculous but couldn't you count back? Surely you've some vague recollection of your purchases and movements for at least one of the powers. If it's quite late then it probably doesn't matter for making future plans anyway.

Edit: Not that I don't think a Turn Counter would be a bad thing, in fact I think it's a great suggestion. I merely mean for this particular instance.

The gist of the suggestion: when you play by email and there are several days between turns, and weeks through several turns, its tough to be sure what turn number you're on. So if your trying to keep track of things such as objective x by turn y, it can make things easier to have a counter. If you are specifically trying to measure movements by turns to tweak a strategy, it would be even more useful. And as we all know, the difference in accomplishing something by one turn sooner or later in a game, for example, the Allies to Egypt by say turn 5 versus turn 6, can be a huge difference. The game often hinges on which turn a power can do what.

A turn counter sounds like an excellent idea to me..as far as sammogs idea of counting back,i don't think thats very practical. Most people who use pbem are several or even many games at once, all with different settings and different rates of play. Sometimes i'm in upto 7 or 8 games at once and have no idea even what power(s)I control until I log in. Just a small feature that could be helpful ....I like the idea..

It was never my suggestion to just have "um dur just count lols!" as my thoughts for this matter. I just can't imagine being in a situation that had gone on so many turns I COULDN'T count back without it being so far from the origin point of that game that the variance wouldn't matter at this massively late stage. That being said a turn counter would still (in fact would regardless...) be a very welcome addition.

It's the best, most rounded and sensible feature request I've heard in a long time. I am thoroughly behind it.

Yep. Would love me a turn counter. BK is spot on when it comes to tweaking strategy. Actually seeing how long it takes to execute a strategy and then a variant of the same would be helpful.

Just wanted to second this request. Was just discussing how nice this would be!

Thank you for the input on this and we have it on our ideas board. As an admin who has to do game rollbacks, I would love this feature more than you would because it will reduce the amount of trial-n-error I have to do in rollbacks without a description of the turn/round.

This has not been discussed to move from the idea list to task assignment list. We do not currently have a prediction for when this will come to be.

Just reiterating how nice this feature would be. As a new crop of tournament games begins each month it can be a little tricky to remember how each game is unfolding. Would be wonderful to see turn 3 or turn 4 up in the corner somewhere (or hidden in a menu for that matter)

I would like to see Turn counter and limited turns option in PBEM too,be interesting to actually try for a draw on 45turns if losing rather than play to a zillion and lose.
i know the baby jesus would like this too,no pressure but the reaping is coming so keep that in mind.

Turn Counter is a great idea. I, too, sometimes, lose track of the turn number if I wanted to go back and try to analyze what has happened and what went wrong.

I also would love to see the following features that I think will go handy with Turn Counter:

1) Ability to see opponent's time remaining to complete his/her turn, similarly to what we can see with our turns. A lot of times when trying to go on a bathroom break or something, I almost have to get a watch our to figure out how much time opponent has on their turn to see if I can make it back on time.

2) Ability save or go back to history of purchases/moves/battles. I can see this being useful both in game - in case you missed what your opponent purchased or what he attacked you with or something like it. And after game for after-game review. Export to txt or scv would be ok too, doesn't have to be graphical replay..

3) Ability to stop the clock if all players agree - to take a break. Some games go over beyond expected boundaries and need to be put on 30-60 min break or something.
