Renaming PBE Games?

Postby RobEng » Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:32 pm

Oooohrah64, and others, have been pursuing GTO to rename our Play-by-Email (PBE) Games. We have always agreed that it is not a great name as it doesn't accurately describe play format and is a bit dated. The problem is/was that we were never able to come up with a better name that emphasizes the ability for a game to be saved and players took their turns when they could rather than in real time. As we were developing the game format we referred to it as "asynchronous" gaming. While accurate, it doesn't roll off the tongue well.

So I am throwing it out to y'all for some ideas! If we get a winner from this forum post we will give them 50 GTO Points.

Thought I'd give this topic a bump. I know Oooohrah64 suggested "Saveable Game Play" and thought I'd throw in some others (absurd as one of them may be) .

-cached game play
-temporal-shifted server-saved asynchronous game play (how's that for rolling off the tongue )
-the game tomb or the game vault (the place where saved games are stored)
-the game bunker (the underground fortification, not the golf sand trap)

Let's hear some more ideas!

Turn-By-Turn

Premium Play - sounds good to me

Facebook Gaming - does any actually use facebook for PBEM?

Sit-N-Go (tourny or not it is ALL sit-n-go playing)

When we play PBEM it is either a direct challenge or an open challenge so instead of
"Play By Email" the tab could say:

Challange Match

I like a few of the suggestions that have already been made and can't think of anything better at the moment, but perhaps the description could also include something like:

"Time Saver Play" - for those that don't have hours to devote to a game in one sitting, this feature allows players to take their turns at their leisure, automatically notify the next player it's their turn.

You can still play live if you're all online at the same time, and if someone has to leave you can continue the the game later.

Force surrender - if a time limit for turns is selected when the game is started (unlimited, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 1 week) then if someone refuses or is unable to take their turn within the time set they can be forced to surrender. Remaining players on a team can take over their turns. *** ie., avoiding frustration when someone is a poor player and can't face being defeated gracefully.

I know the wording isn't polished since this is just a quick comment, but pushing it's advantages clearly would be a good thing in my mind.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Mark

The underlying problem w/the PBE - PBEM tag is how people think of the term.

When people see play-by-email the thought is of two or more people with board games set up in their homes exchanging emails back and forth, maybe using an online dicing engine. A couple of times I have offered to set up PBE challenges on the main GTO lobby and received confused responses from GTO members, including some email addresses from gamers who do not understand the product being offered. What RobEng and company have set up for us is a savable, interruptible, interactive game table using the Metagame™ format. Instead of having purely live play that last for hours on end we can have both live play AND turn by turn interrupted play without loosing the data or, as Ooohrah said, our marriages. We are not actually playing by email. We are playing interactive online games without needing to do live play.

Names like: "Savable Games" or "Interactive Games" convey the right idea but lack the right tone.

The question remains, what is the best term to describe the service being offered?

I was going to give it about a month to get a decent sampling of ideas/input.
